SUMMARY:My Best Friend: A Pedestrian Story
DESCRIPTION:Due to the COVID-19 Virus we are postponing this event. Please check back for updates.\nIn late 2019\, we gathered with community advocates to laydown a chalk outline where a pedestrian was killed in 2018 and the first half of 2019\, we marked 91 outlines. The screening will be followed by a community discussion about the pedestrian issue and ideas to help make our community safer for all road users. \nIf you would like to be updated when this event is rescheduled please fill out our CONTACT US form.

SUMMARY:HO-Ho---No!
DESCRIPTION:HO-Ho—No!\nAs part of our on-going efforts to educate the public about the role they play in eliminating pedestrian fatalities\, law enforcement will join together on Tuesday\, December 18th to enforce pedestrian laws. The morning will be spent on Silverado Ranch Blvd and Placid\, just east of Las Vegas Blvd\, reminding drivers that when they have time to stop for pedestrians crossing the street\, that\, by law\, they must stop to let the person walking get safely across the lanes in the direction the driver is traveling. \nIn the afternoon\, officers will be across the area reminding pedestrians that\, by law\, they are only allowed to cross at intersections or marked mid-block crosswalks. If Santa has trouble crossing the street\, what chance do mere mortals have of getting safely across? \n\nAs a reminder\, wherever two streets cross\, pedestrians have the right-of-way; there does not have to be a painted crosswalk for the walker to legally cross the street.\nWhen turning right\, drivers must wait for pedestrians crossing; when a person is waiting next to the car\, they pedestrian goes first\, and the driver must wait until the walker has made it half way across the street. If there were pedestrians on the opposite corner\, who are crossing toward the driver\, and they have reached the middle of the street\, the driver must stay stopped for them until they are on the sidewalk.\nIt is illegal for any driver to pass a stopped vehicle at any intersection or marked mid-block crosswalk until the driver can determine why the other vehicle is stopped.\nPedestrians are not allowed to dash-out and not give drivers time to see them\, react and stop. If the driver does not have stop to stop it is not their fault. In this enforcement the stopping distance for the posted speed limit plus 10 mph is marked off and noted with a cone.\nPedestrians should do whatever they can to help drivers see them; lights\, reflectors and light-colored clothing help drivers see you! If a car is traveling at 40 mph\, it takes close to a football field’s length to see you\, react and stop.\n\nThese are just some tips to help keep you safer this holiday season; as always\, the best tips are to make sure you have enough time to safely get to your destination\, drive and walk sober\, use safety equipment! \nWhatever holiday you and your family celebrate\, we hope it is Merry\, Peaceful and Safe! \n

SUMMARY:The Great Pumpkin Rides Again
DESCRIPTION:The Great Pumpkin Rides Again \nTuesday\, October 23rd is the annual Pumpkin in the Crosswalk\, this year taking place on Decatur Boulevard at Palmyra Avenue from 7:30 am to 11:30 am. This location is a school crossing zone that has no flashers\, just signs marking the zone\, where it is difficult\, even with a crossing guard\, to get safely across the street. This location is on the list for a full build out and flashers later this school year through CC Public Works. And here’s a treat for you…. Pay special attention this month because LVMPD is stepping up pedestrian enforcement as their focus area. With shorter days and the coming time change\, this is the most dangerous time of the year for those on foot!.

SUMMARY:Halloween Trunk or Treat and Light Parade
DESCRIPTION:Halloween Trunk or Treat and Light Parade!\nIf you are in Las Vegas on October 25th\, grab your kids\, in costume if you’d like to\, and head over to the Cambridge Recreation Center\, 3930 Cambridge Street\, just north of Flamingo and a block west of Maryland Parkway; for a Trunk or Treat event and Electric Light Parade! This event will be so much fun for the family! \nTwo great volunteers\, Soo Clinton and Scott Kavula\, who became dedicated advocates to pedestrian safety when Soo was driving home one Halloween and came very close to hitting a child trick or treating\, they developed a lighted basket that we have been lucky enough to partner with them to get out to kids for many years. \nFor this event\, Clinton and Kavula have donated a light-up wand\, with multi-colored lights\, and they have rented cotton candy machines for this event\, so we will be using the wands as sticks for the candy and the kids will have the wands to take with them. \nOther partners\, such as RTC Bike Program\, UMC Trauma and Look Out\, Kids About\, will join UNLV’s Vulnerable Road Users Project and CCSD Police\, to pass out additional lights and flashers to kids attending\, with messages about safe walking and biking on Halloween night and every night. \nThe larger Trunk or Treat event is sponsored by LVMPD’s South Central Area Command\, and will include other Metro partners\, games\, fun and many police and EMS vehicles with decorated trunks full of candy. \nBring your family for a great time and lasting benefits!
